GREEN THUMB

Another week (and holiday) has passed this is September. The days are getting shorter. The work seems longer with less time to get it done.

By now you should have your second garden planted. There are two months (60 days) for results. Not to mention the results of the original garden. The produce is most appreciated especially during the winter.

There is still much outside work to get done. .Last week we mentioned planting trees and shrubs this time of year to help them get established before winter sets in. More about that in future columns.

In the meantime its a good idea to take stock of what needs doing outside (and inside) before winter sets in. Then to get it done while missing rain and later snow. Somehow it has to get done. And then the wrapup - closing down the yard and garden before winter.

We may seem to be rushing the season but our mail - which started with calendars in July now has Christmas cards, Christmas wrapping paper and the usual requests for a donation. In the meantime take care of your garden outside and house plants inside.

More next week.
