GREEN THUMB

August is now half way over. Next week is the County Fair, and shortly the kids will be going back to school.

This is the week we will be going over our garden and produce to see what we can exhibit at the fair. Happily some should win a few ribbons.

This writer can remember in past years receiving the prize money check. Sometimes it went for an airplane kit. In the case of a great aunt it helped pay family expenses. And the fair exhibit items became dinner items.

We have many memories of past fairs and what we exhibited. We still look at the exhibits to see what others raised and exhibits sometimes to compare ours with the winners.

Some years there were very tall corn stalks. Much taller than any we raised.

The floral arrangements were interesting too, especially seeing how some were arranged.

Our Uncle Nor took many floral arrangements to the Duluth fair. This writer helped clean up after the fair one year. The floral superintendent told him it wouldn’t have been much of a display without his many arrangements.

I think he must have had about half the arrangements. And the flower vases filled several boxes.

There are many other exhibits to see at the County Fair. Some are 4-H and some are commercial. This writer expects to helping one commercial exhibit again so we hope to see some of you at the Fair.

In the meantime be sure to water your house plants. See you at the Fair.
