The MCC Rebel Baseball team is off to a good start this season with a 4-1 record heading into a tough game on Tuesday. The Rebels lost a majority of their starting lineup from a year ago but have played scrappy baseball to start the season and on Tuesday they would take on the defending Red Rock Conference Champions. Edgerton Southwest Christian was 5-1 entering the game and had picked up a 9-8 win on Monday against Adrian Ellsworth. MCC would come through with another tough win on Tuesday night.

Edgerton Southwest Christian started the game strong with a single and two walks. The Flying Dutchmen scored one run on a wild pitch and two more runs on an MCC error. Scoring three runs in the first inning was a strong start. They added three more runs in the second inning. The Rebels helped the Dutchmen in the second inning when MCC hit the leadoff hitter and walked the second batter. A sacrifice bunt moved runners to second and third base. Edgerton then got a pair of singles and a double to score three runs. The six runs in the first two innings were all the Dutchmen would get.

The Rebels at the plate started strong, just like the Flying Dutchmen. MCC started the first inning with four straight singles, with Dylan Kluis driving in a run. Krew Schneider singled to make four hits in a row. MCC scored their second run on a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error that followed. Dugan Kluis singled in the Rebel’s final run of the first inning to tie the game at 3-3. The Rebels trailed 6-3 going to the bottom of the second but that didn’t last long. MCC got a hit by pitch to open the inning, followed by two singles to load the bases. The Rebel’s first out was on a strikeout and the second came on a fielder’s choice. MCC was trailing 6-3 with two outs in the second. A hit by pitch scored a run to get the Rebels within two. Then Owen Gillette hit a double that scored all three runners and gave the Rebels the lead 7-6. Gillette gave the Rebels an insurance run on a solo home run in the fifth inning. The Rebels picked up a huge win 8-6.

Krew Schneider got the win for the Rebels on the mound, pitching 4 innings, striking out 7 while allowing 6 runs, four of which were earned. The Rebel bullpen pitched well, with Caden Veldhuisen pitching first and Teague Meyer picking up the same. The Rebel duo didn’t allow a run in three innings. Owen Gillette had the big game for the Rebels going 2 for 3, getting 5 RBIs with a double and a home run. Teague Meyer had three hits in four at-bats and scored two runs while stealing 2 bases. The Rebel pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts while the Edgerton pitchers struck out just 5 Rebel hitters. MCC is now 5 and 1 on the season with the Wolverines of Mountain Lake Area Comfrey coming to Slayton on Thursday.
