The Murray County Central Rebel Softball team was on the road Thursday for their only game of the week. The Rebels took on the Wolverines of Mountain Lake Area Comfrey. The Wolverines have a very different roster than they did a year ago and a new coaching staff. The new-look MLAC team has had some early season struggles and the Rebels would add to them on Thursday as MCC would pick up their sixth win of the season.

The MCC Rebels have been a slow-starting team this season. The Rebels have trailed in most of their games this season, even if by just one run. The Rebels never trailed on Thursday, but they would take some time to get on the scoreboard. In the second inning, Atalie Rosenbrook singled and then scored on a Calleigh Doeden double to center field. It was the only run the Rebel scored through three innings.

While the Rebels were not scoring in the first three innings, Thea Schneider was pitching well and the Rebels defense was playing strong defense, despite the fierce winds blowing across the field. The Wolverines have some speed at the top of the lineup which makes them dangerous, but the Rebels did a nice job of navigating around baserunners without allowing any runs to score. Schneider did a good job of getting key strikeouts when they were needed. The Rebels only scored one run in three innings but Schneider and the Rebel defense didn’t allow the Wolverines to score through five innings.

MCC’s offense exploded in the 4th and 5th innings, led by a couple of seniors. Morgan Winter has not been allowed to hit this season due to an injury. Thursday was her first day back in the lineup. The senior stepped to the plate in the fourth and ripped a double to left field to drive in one of the Rebel’s six runs in the inning. The Rebels led 7 to 0 going to the fifth. This time, Winter stepped to the plate with two runners on base. The senior connected on a three-run home run to left field, putting the Rebels up 10-0. Grace Buesing, another Rebel senior, came to the plate later in the inning and connected on her first hit of the season, driving in two runs. The Rebels ended the game early by ten run rule 15-0.

The Rebels had a great team win over MLAC with the team spreading out 10 hits with 6 of those being extra-base hits with 5 doubles and a home run. Morgan WInter led the team with 4 RBIs and Thea Schneider picked up the win, striking out 6 and walking 1. The Wolverines managed just 4 hits in the game and all were singles. The Rebels picked up their fourth win of the season in the Red Rock Conference. MCC is now 6-1 on the season and tied for second place in the Red Rock Conference with Edgerton Southwest Christian, who lost their first conference game in years on Thursday to RTR. The Rebels and the Flying Dutchmen will play Tuesday in Slayton, weather permitting.
