VS. MLAC

The MCC Rebel Baseball team was at home on Thursday taking on the Wolverines of Mountain Lake Area Comfrey in a Red Rock Conference showdown. The Rebels entered play at 4-0 in the Red Rock Conference and the only team without a loss this season. MLAC on the other hand was the only team without a win in conference play. The Rebels made sure those numbers didn’t change.

Teague Meyer got the start on the mound for the Rebels just a couple of days after picking up the save in the Rebels win over Edgerton. Meyer threw a complete game for the Rebels, going 7 innings, which has become harder to do at the high school level with the pitch count. What Meyer did Thursday, which allowed him to stay in the game, was to pound the strike zone. Meyer didn’t walk a batter in 7 innings, which has been an issue for the Rebels pitching staff this season. MLAC was able to put two runs on the board but they were spread out, with one run each in the first and seventh inning.

The Rebel’s offense has found ways to score consistently this season, even if the hits have not been. The Rebels have done a great job on the basepaths, stealing bases and putting pressure on the opponent’s defenses. In this game, the Rebels scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning with a single and two stolen bases by Teague Meyer followed by a single from Dylan Kluis. Krew Schneider reached base on a fielder’s choice and came around to score with the help of the Rebel’s strong base running and a Wolverine error. The Rebels blew the game open in the 4th inning when the first 6 Rebel hitters all reached base. MCC would get 5 singles surrounding a hit batter. Cayden Veldhuisen and Owen Gillette drove in runs, MCC took advantage of a wild pitch and the Rebels were up 8-1. The Rebels added another run in the 6th inning on their way to a 9-2 win.

Teague Meyer led the Rebels on the mound, striking out 6 and allowing 2 earned runs in 7 innings. He helped lead the Rebels at the plate as well with two hits, two RBIs, and two stolen bases. Dylan Kluis and Cayden Veldhuisen each had two hits, as the Rebels had 11 as a team. Veldhuisen had 2 RBIs in the MCC win. The Rebels are now 6-1 on the season and 5-0 in the Red Rock Conference.

VS. Edgerton/SWC

The MCC Rebel Baseball team on Monday was on the road to Edgerton. The Rebels were undefeated in Red Rock Conference action this season and were coming off a win over the Edgerton/ SWC Dutchmen just a week ago. The Dutchmen ground crew worked all day to get the field playable after the weekend rains and they did enough. It was a cold windy day in Edgerton for a tough low-scoring game between two of the top teams in the Red Rock Conference.

The MCC Rebels got the offense in this game and started loading the bases with one out in the second inning but failed to score after a couple of pop-ups. The Rebels did score the first run of the game in the fourth in-ning, when Krew Schneider was hit by a pitch, advanced to third base with a wild pitch and a ground out, and then scored on a ground out by Dugan Kluis. The Rebels scored another run in the top of the 6th inning. Aidan Dierks was hit by a pitch and Dylan Kluis was walked to put two runners on. Krew Schneider grounded out, but Dierks scored, tying the game for the Rebels at 2-2.

The Edgerton/SWC Dutchmen struggled through the first four innings, then scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Edgerton/SWC singled twice to open the inning, but a caught stealing would erase one runner. Then a hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases. A ground out and an error allowed the Edgerton/SWC Dutchmen to score 2 runs. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the first two hitters walked and Cameron Fenske singled to left field, scoring what would be the game-winning run as the Dutchmen would get the win, avenging last week’s loss to the Rebels.

It was a low-scoring pitcher’s duel on Monday with Josh Van Damn getting the win and Krew Schneider picking up the loss. Schneider allowed just 3 hits and 2 earned runs. He struck out 10 batters, while walking four and hitting four. Van Dam allowed just 2 earned runs while striking out 1 and walking 2. The Rebels will be back at home on Thursday when they host the Dragons of Adrian Ellsworth.
