GREEN THUMB

By Arnold Krusemark Its now past mid-April so its time to get the gardening going. Our idea for this week’s column came in a gardening magazine. They suggested when planning and planting your garden add a row or two of vegetables to add to your expected produce.

There are quite a few good reasons for doing this. First, your regular garden may not produce well due to insects and other problems. Then there’s what to do with the extra produce. Some can be saved such as by freezing. Sometimes you might have a nice neighbor who would be willing to accept some produce or trade it for something they grew.

And then there’s Farmers’ Market where gardeners sell their surplus. This writer can remember it was in August when someone at our church announced they had a huge surplus of sweet corn. So the church had a sweet corn festival. Along with a few games and a good social. Our contribution was a pound of butter (on sale) and several salt and pepper shakers. And napkins. The feast went well.

As for seeds remember several local merchants have seed sales - usually of seeds left over from past years. I see them on sale for 10c a package. Another Spring item - for a rainy day check out the lawn mower and garden tools. In our case our lawn mower needs to have the battery charged up. And the gas tank filled. And check the blade. Also on a good day get the lawn mower going and out to make sure it is working ok.

We can mention some other yard and garden work needing doing too. Collecting down tree branches, for example. And then having our first bonfire of the season. That will keep you busy for a while.

Back inside the house be sure to water your house plants too. Until next week.
