The Murray County Historical Society invites the public to attend its final Dinehart Lunchbox Lecture of the 2022-2023 season on Thursday, March 9, 2023, in the 4-H building on the Murray County Fairgrounds in Slayton starting at noon. This lecture will feature Kandiyohi County native, Carolyn Mankell Sowinski who will present: “Frozen on the Minnesota Prairie: The Blizzard of January 7, 1873.”

Sowinski has written a book about a 3-day blizzard which occurred 150 years ago. In her book, “The Great Storm:Minnesota’s Victims in the Blizzard of January 7, 1873,” she has identified 84 people from 31 counties in the state who died in this storm: men and women; children and babies; Civil War veterans and recent immigrants; homesteaders and villagers; state residents and visitors. Friends died together; neighbors died together; family members died together. Many died alone— suffering for one, two, or all three days. In her presentation Sowinski will share the stories of Murray County victims Norman C. Cleaveland and Knute Oleson. Sowinski will read excerpts about the storm, highlight some historic documents about the victims, and provide helpful hints when doing research. Sowinski will have copies of the book for sale at the lecture (cash or check). Copies of the book are also available at the Murray County Historical Museum prior to the event. The author has five books about her ancestors and Minnesota history available on Amazon.com.

The cost of the talk is $3.00 per person or Historical Society members get in free. Attendees are welcome to bring their own lunch. Refreshments and light snacks are provided. Prefer not to or can’t attend in-person? The presentation will also be live streamed on the Murray County Historical Museum’s Facebook page. If you can’t watch it live, the live streamed video will also be recorded and saved on our Facebook page to watch at your leisure.
